EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by musician Jamie Stillman who played in bands like Relaxer, Fringe Candidate, Teeth of the Hydra, Party of Helicopters, Harriet the Spy, and “New” Terror Class. He has long had a fascination with electronics and effects pedals, and practiced designing guitar effects pedals in the years leading up to EarthQuaker Devices’s launch.
Stillman spent a few years managing his own record label, then redirected his focus to circuit design and creating and selling unique builds while working odd jobs to make ends meet. He went through a few years of trial and error before releasing his first build, the Hoof Fuzz, in 2007 that quickly gained online popularity.
EarthQuaker Devices moved into a renovated building in Akron, Ohio, in 2015, establishing a home base that still produces hand-designed effects pedals to this day. The company follows a simple creed — creating quality products that work well, every time — that has given it a reputation for great customer service. It even offers to repair any devices that happen to break!
